Support Film Product Note,
How the Material is Layered on the Grid

Most of the grids used have a distinct “shiny” side and “dull” side when viewed with the naked eye. Generally, the film type as specified in the product name lies on the shiny side of the grid.

Grid Cross Section

=SHINY side
=DULL side
=Formvar
=Carbon

Formvar Only: Formvar is on the SHINY side.

Formvar stabilized with Carbon (or silicon monoxide): The Formvar is applied to the SHINY side and a thin carbon (or silicon monoxide) layer deposited on top of the Formvar. Therefore if the grid is held shiny side up the carbon (or silicon monoxide) film is being viewed.

If the grid is held dull side up the surface of the Formvar film can be seen through the mesh of the grid.

Carbon type-b: Same as above but with a much thicker carbon layer.

Carbon (or silicon monoxide) Type-A:  The Formvar film is applied to the dull side of the grid and the carbon (or silicon monoxide) deposited onto the shiny side. When the Formvar is removed in solvent the carbon (or silicon monoxide) film is left on the shiny side. Specimen material can be applied on either side and in each case will lie on carbon (or silicon monoxide).

Ultra thin carbon type-a: Same as above but with a much thinner carbon layer.

Product no. 01824, ultra thin carbon film on a holey/lacey film: A carbon holey/lacey film is attached to the shiny side of the grid. an ultra thin carbon film lies on top of the holey/lacey film. specimen suspensions are best applied to the dull side of the grid and dry specimen material can be applied to either side.

Pure carbon film: The carbon film is attached to the shiny side of the grid

Lacey formvar stabilized with Carbon (or silicon monoxide): The Lacey Formvar is applied to the shiny side and a carbon (or silicon monoxide) layer deposited on top of the Lacey Formvar. Formvar film is not removable. Since carbon (or silicon monoxide) film is deposited on top of Formvar film, removing Formvar film could damage carbon film.

Lacey carbon Type A: The Lacey formvar film is applied to the dull side of the grid and carbon deposited onto the shiny side. When the formvar is removed in solvent the carbon film is left on the shiny side.

Lacey carbon with no formvar: The Lacey carbon film is applied to the shiny side of the grid.

Product no. 609 carbon holey film: The holey carbon film is attached to the shiny side of the grid.
