Gel-Pak® PortaVac


The Gel-Box, Gel-Tray and Gel-Slide product series are designed to protect and store sensitive devices and specimens during transport, processing, inspection and assembly. Devices can be loaded and removed easily using tweezers or by hand from the unique highly cross-linked Gel polymer. The degree of holding force of the Gel is depending on the tackiness of the Gel material, which is called Retention Level. The Gel material is strong in both shear and vertical directions, but weak in the peel direction, which allows parts to be easily unloaded from the Gel surface. Gel is an extremely durable and versatile material that maintains its properties between -40°C to 220°C. Minimum shelf life is 2 years.

Applications for semiconductor devices, sensors, micromechanical devices, photoelectronics, hard drive heads, bio-medical devices, specimen storage. All Gel-Pak® boxes are packed under cleanroom conditions, in compatible packaging, and come in sleeves of 50 boxes per package.

Retention levels available are X0, X4 and X8. The optimum tack level for individual parts depends on material, size, weight and surface roughness. Unfortunately there is no exact formula to calculate the retention level but general guidelines are:

  • Low retention level - X0 - for highly polished surfaces
  • Medium retention level - X4 - for pre-polished and/or etched surfaces
  • High retention level - X8 - for rough surfaces like ceramics

Gel-Pak® has devised an effective box system that offers a versatile selection of box materials optimized for the diverse range of applications:

  • C - Conductive black polycarbonate (optimum protection against static discharges)
  • AS - Clear Anti-Static plastic (optimum visibility)
  • CAS - Clear Anti-Static top with conductive plastic bottom (optimum for ESD safe protection and visibility)
  • T - Clear Styrene Box  for non ESD sensitive parts (most economical solution)


Gel-Box AD Series

Gel-Box (AD Series)

The original and widely used Gel-Box is a plastic hinged box with the Gel material coated in the bottom. Standard box sizes range from 1" x 1" to 3-1/2" x 4-1/2".

Gel-Tray BD Series

Gel-Tray (BD Series)

The Gel-Trays are configured as a 2 x 2" carrier tray stored in a protective hinged box which can be easily removed for access or transfer. Maximum temperature for the trays is in the range of 70-80°C.  The trays are available in either conductive black polycarbonate (C) or clear styrene (T). Retention levels available are X0, X4 and X8. The boxes are available in a variety of materials. Useable area is 1.5 x 1.5" (38.1 x 38.1mm) with a clearance of 0.065" (1.65mm).

Gel-slide CD Series

Gel-Slide (CD Series)

The Gel-Slides are 2 x 2" glass slide carriers stored in a protective plastic hinged box. The advantage is the glass slide can be used up to temperatures of 220°C. Retention level available is X4. Boxes are available in clear plastic (T) and anti-static clear plastic (AS). Useable area is 1.94 x 1.94" (49.3 x 49.3mm) with a clearance of 0.215" (5.45mm).

Gel-Pak® Vacuum Release (VR) Series

These vacuum-release storage and shipping boxes from Gel-Pak® are available in 2" and 4" sizes. The 2" box is hinged with snap closure, while the 4" box slides into a clip (GP-CLIP-44C) for secure closure and transport. Each box contains a Gel-Pak® tray with X4 gel to firmly hold substrates, electronic devices, and other materials. Applying vacuum to the tray puts it in release mode allowing samples to be removed easily without prying or application of force. Gel-Pak® VR series boxes may be used in automated pick-and-place applications.

Gel-Pak® Cleantape

Intended for cleaning Gel-Pak® boxes and trays for reuse. Over time contamination can degrade the tackiness of the gel and limit its lifetime. In environments where cleanliness is paramount it may be difficult to remove debris from the gel, but Cleantape is formulated so that it is tackier than the gel and can easily remove debris or other contamination from the gel surface enabling reuse.
