Production Manager


Ted Pella, Inc. designs, manufactures and sells instruments and supplies for those in science and industry who use microscopes in research and production. We are seeking a full time Production Manager to oversee and provide leadership and support to daily production and personnel management in four production areas. This person will work with department leaders and oversee planning, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring of raw materials made into products through the complete production cycle. This positon reports to the Director of Manufacturing.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the company’s production operations, including small parts production, instrument production, thin film lab, machine shop, and chemical production.
  • Work with the department leaders to ensure the planning, organization, prioritization, and coordination of the production operations are successful to meet manufacturing deadlines and goals.
  • Manage the manufacturing and finished goods inventories of made-in products to balance inventory value and ability to ship orders in a timely manner.
  • Working with Director of Manufacturing, provide expertise to production departments to formulate, develop and implement manufacturing methods, standards, and quality controls.
  • Oversee the selection, hiring, training, effective supervision, evaluation, development and discipline of staff in assigned departments. Develop individuals for advancement.
  • Achieve cost reduction through improved efficiency, work practices, and tooling.
  • Promote safety and ergonomic manufacturing practices by monitoring existing practices and looking to implement improvements in manufacturing.
  • Working with Director of Manufacturing, ensure that work instructions and procedures are maintained and kept current.
  • Translate production demand requirements into time-phased build schedules.
  • Assess production plans using internal Syspro ERP and sales forecasting.
  • Review, update and/or implement production set-up/run times.
  • Analyze customer, historical and future demand to develop a master production schedule.
  • Coordinate with Purchasing to achieve optimum levels of production output. Closely interact with Purchasing to provide material procurement data and expediting of critical parts.
  • Collaborate with cross functional groups, such as Purchasing and Engineering to expedite orders or resolve issues that might impact on-time delivery.
  • Participate in and/or lead Production meetings with other functional groups within operations to discuss weekly/daily schedules, material shortages and priorities for production.
  • Generate reports to provide order status, track performance or convey issues.
  • Create manufacturing jobs, coordinate the release of materials to support schedule and on time deliveries.
  • Perform Min/Max and Re-order requirement analyses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum B.S. degree in a relevant field, including Manufacture Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Management, from an accredited college/university.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of related experience in a manufacturing environment, including production management, material planning, distribution, production and scheduling.
  • Experience in a small instrument and consumables production environment is a plus.
  • Thorough understanding of production and assembly management operational concepts surrounding production planning, inventory control, purchasing, stockroom operations and shipping/receiving is required.
  • Proven experience using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is required. Must be proficient using ERP system and other resources to effectively prioritize production, and optimize purchases and inventory for production. Experience with Syspro ERP is a plus.
  • Prior demonstrated experience in tuning a Production environment to optimize output and use of resources, i.e. assembly line design and set-up experience.
  • Prior personnel management experience is required, including interviewing and selecting staff; coaching, counseling, disciplinary processes, and terminations; writing and conducting performance reviews; setting performance goals; employee training; employee communications, motivation and morale; leadership development; and optimal use of production personnel in manufacturing environment.
  • Highly proficient in a Windows environment and with a recent version of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Strong MS Excel skills are a must. Virtual conferencing skills is a must.
  • Results-oriented, motivated self-starter, capable of driving progress, solving problems, and achieving objectives in a precision environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with staff inside production departments and throughout the company, and work well on teams. Ability to collaborate successfully with others to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible to changing priorities, deadlines, demands and assignments as needed.
  • Extremely detail-oriented, accurate, and highly organized.
  • High level of analytical ability required (queries, data manipulation, statistics, trending).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, peers, and customers.
  • Ability to speak, write, and communicate in the English language fluently is required. Must have excellent math, reading, writing and spelling skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in U.S. without sponsorship.

Schedule/Pay/Benefits:

This is a full time exempt position; competitive salary will be commensurate with experience. Standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm; additional hours may be necessary as needed.
