Chemical Listed As Carcinogen Or Potential Carcinogen: NIF
See Toxicological Information (Section11)
Potential environmental effects
See Ecological Information (Section 12)
Section 4: First Aid Measures
If accidental overexposure is suspected
Eye(s) Contact: The antifadent solution is strongly alkaline. If some is splashed into the eye, wash with copious amounts of water and seek medical help.
Skin Contact: Being strongly alkaline, as a consequence if any material
comes in contact with the skin, the affected areas should be washed with
copious amounts of water to avoid burns.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air, seek medical help.
Ingestion: If swallowed, wash out mouth with plenty of water, provided the person is conscious and seek medical help.
Note to physician
Treatment: NIF
Medical Conditions generally Aggravated by Exposure: NIF
Section 5: Fire Fighting Measures
Flash Point: 320°F
Flammable Limits: ND
Auto-ignition point: 698°F
Fire Extinguishing Media: Treat as glycerol. Suitable extinguishing material includes
water spray jet, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: NIF
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: NIF
Hazardous combustion products: The burning of glycerol produces carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
DOT Class: None
Section 6: Accidental Release Measures
Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Small spillages may
be wiped up with an absorbent cloth or paper towel for disposal provided the
operator wears protective gloves. If large quantity, the material maybe
absorbed on to sand or vermiculite and place in closed container for
disposal. Ventilate area and wash spill site with water after material pickup
is complete.
Waste Disposal Methods: Dispose of waste according to Federal, State and Local
Regulations.
Section 7: Handling and Storage
Precautions to be Taken in Handling and Storage: The antifadent solution should
be stored in a brown glass bottle fitted with a tight fitting cap and ideally
out of direct sunlight. Should not be stored with or near oxidizing agents or
strong acids.
Storage temperature: Room Temperature. Solutions up to two years have performed well in qualitative tests.
Storage Pressure: NA
Section 8: Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Engineering Controls
Ventilation required: Use in a well ventilated area.
Personal Protection Equipment
Respiratory protection: Use in fume hood or well ventilated area.
Protective gloves: Wear gloves
Skin protection: Wear gloves and protective clothing.
Eye protection: Wear safety glasses or face shield
Additional clothing and/or equipment: To dispose of slides which have been used
with the solution, place them in a vessel fitted with a lid or having a narrow
aperture labeled “Sharps”. These containers should be removed from the
“microscope room” on a daily basis or sealed after use.
Exposure Guidelines

Section 10: Stability and Reactivity
Stability: Stable
Conditions to Avoid: Direct sunlight. Incompatible materials.
Materials to Avoid (Incompatibility): Since the main component is glycerol
which is trihydric alcohol and therefore easily oxidized it should not be
stored near or with oxidizing agents (perchloric acid, nitric acid, potassium
permanganate or dichromate and hydrogen peroxide). Storage near materials which
react violently with alcohols should be avoided ( sodium hydride,
phosphorus pentoxide, sulphuric acid).
